The accessory that never dies

Are fanny packs back in style? Were they ever in style? These are the questions I keep asking myself as I attempt to study for an Anatomy and Physiology test.

What is a fanny pack?

fanny pack touristA fanny pack is a small fabric pouch with a zipper enclosure secured to the waist by a strap. Unfamiliar with the term, “fanny pack?” You may be more familiar with other words synonymous with fanny pack, such as bum bag, belt pack, belt bag, hip sack, hip pouch and hip pack.

Great fashion comes from the 80s …

Fanny packs took us by surprise in the 1980s. Although not your typical group of trendsetters, this fashion accessory was introduced to us by mothers, fathers, tourists and anyone else wishing to simplify life with a hands-free purse. By the late 80s, everyone had one, including me!

Not everyone shares my love for the fanny pack …

Weird Al’s parody, “White and Nerdy,” insinuates that fanny packs are unfashionable. I am not really sure where he came to that conclusion, but I guess we are each entitled to our own opinions. Watch “White and Nerdy” on YouTube!

Almost 30 years later …

Since people watching is my game, I make it a point to stare at everyone wearing fashion accessories that exceed the boundaries of cool. I find myself scanning crowds for people wearing fanny packs (I also love to spot the parents with their children on leashes … very awesome!). To my surprise, I see more people wearing fanny packs these days than I did this time last year. Could it be that I am more observant than I was last year? Perhaps. Are they coming back in style? Maybe.

Back to studying …

If I do well on my Anatomy and Physiology test, I have decided to reward myself with a fanny pack. Any incentive to make me try harder is good in my mind.

Admittedly, I was one of those people who used to wear fanny packs.

Today, I find them handy when you are traveling but not as a fashion accessory to wear everyday.

  2. How many fanny packs do you own, Tina? You should start wearing one all the time. I hear that fanny packs look awesome with wedding gowns …

I had a fanny pack or two they were great on trips to Six flags or Opryland. My favorite one was pink with a unicorn on it. I would wear it if I still had it and I would be cool!

Almost all of whatever you mention happens to be supprisingly appropriate and that makes me ponder the reason why I hadn’t looked at this with this light before. Your piece really did switch the light on for me personally as far as this subject matter goes. However there is 1 issue I am not necessarily too comfortable with and whilst I attempt to reconcile that with the main idea of the point, allow me observe exactly what all the rest of the readers have to say.Nicely done.
