Just call me Maurice Minnifield

maurice minnifieldI was always told that it is not polite to brag. Bragging is a form of self promotion. And, according to my mother, people that brag have low self esteem and are just looking for attention. All of that may be true, but I am taking a minute to brag! Read more

Being human is a complicated gig

January 25th, 2008 | Category: Happiness, Humans, Northern Exposure, People watching, technology

Since I love to quote “Northern Exposure,” I am going to run with one of my favorite lines …

“There’s a dark side to each and every human soul. We wish we were Obi-Wan Kenobi, and for the most part we are, but there’s a little Darth Vadar in all of us. Thing is, this ain’t no either/or proposition. We’re talking about dialectics, the good and the bad merging into us. You can run but you can’t hide. My experience? Face the darkness, stare it down. Own it. As brother Nietzsche said, being human is a complicated gig. Give that old dark night of the soul a hug. Howl the eternal yes!”

humansAs humans, we have created such complicated lives for ourselves. We are an “advanced” species (this is still up for debate) that thrives on power, money, sex and time. As a result, we find ourselves in a web of greed forever seeking “happiness.”

What is this happiness?

Defining art

Only a loyal “Northern Exposure” fan will understand this …

chris stevensSince my life has evolved into its own rendition of “Northern Exposure,” I have chosen to only consume my thoughts with such nonsense as that which comes straight from the wisdom of KBHR’s finest, Chris Stevens.

In my own dissatisfaction with my lack of artistic talent, I have decided to continue “trying” for as long as I possibly can. In the end, I may burn my creations or give them away without even a lingering memory.

nx2Northern Exposure! You could learn a lot from the TV series that only lasted six short seasons. This is a show that was ahead of its time.

Why is Northern Exposure the most awesome show on earth? Well, let’s take a second to break it down outside of the pure comical value.

We simply exist …

On the road again

July 31st, 2007 | Category: Driving, Family, Health, Northern Exposure, Travel

car accident

After an unfortunate car accident flipped a car three times and sent my cousin into the hospital for several days, I am trekking to Arkansas. He will live and will only sport a few scars and some gruesome flesh wounds. His head, although hit, has remained fully intact. No brain damage.

This is all quite good to hear … especially after admission to the ER and ICU unconsious and listed in serious condition.

I am just thankful that he has pulled through and wants a visit from his cuz. How can I refuse? If I had to name one person in this world that even closely resembles me, it would be my cuz. He is the male version of Hope. Great times we have together.

I am looking forward to seeing him and the rest of my family living in Arkansas. I am packing all six seasons of Northern Exposure. Get ready for a marathon of Joel, Maurice, Maggie, Holling, Ruth Ann, Chris Stevens, Bernard and more! I will be ready to share analytical thoughts behind each action of my favorite characters upon my return.
